Statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis, and because cholesterol is abundant in the brain, it’s understandable why concerns about cognition emerged. However, the brain largely synthesizes its own cholesterol behind the blood–brain barrier, and circulating LDL cholesterol contributes relatively little to cerebral cholesterol homeostasis. More importantly, multiple randomized trials and large observational studies have generally not found evidence that statins increase the risk of dementia. In fact, by reducing vascular injury and stroke risk, they may indirectly help preserve cognitive health in many patients.
I also think this is a good reminder that vascular health and brain health are deeply intertwined. Hypertension, diabetes, smoking, insulin resistance, and atherosclerosis all increase the risk of vascular cognitive impairment and may contribute to neurodegeneration. Protecting the cardiovascular system is, in many ways, also an investment in long-term brain health.
The broader lesson is that medicine should be guided by the totality of evidence rather than isolated mechanisms or anecdotes. Biological hypotheses are invaluable for generating questions, but they must ultimately be tested against high-quality clinical data. That’s how we separate plausible concerns from actual patient outcomes.
It’s a great example of why scientific thinking requires holding two ideas at once: remaining open to potential harms while also being willing to revise our assumptions when the evidence consistently points in another direction.

Probably the biggest area that we're going to explode is biochemistry.We have a chronic systemic problem with our University system. They have to teach the dogma of the day because they are political. Whatever the physics community says are the important issues is what they will teach.
